At 8:00 AM, you are required to be prepared in the lobby of your hotel in Cairo, where your knowledgeable tour guide will be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name. Your first destination will be the 'Cave Church' in Egypt, recognized as one of the largest churches in the nation, where over 70,000 Christians gather weekly to worship and honor Jesus, making it a significant site for one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. This cave, also referred to as the Monastery of Saint Simon, is situated in the Mokattam mountain range in southeastern Cairo, in an area colloquially known as 'garbage city' due to the substantial population of waste collectors, known as Zabbaleen, who reside there. The Zabbaleen are descendants of farmers who migrated from Upper Egypt to Cairo in the 1940s, escaping poor agricultural yields and poverty in search of employment, leading to the establishment of makeshift settlements throughout the city. Initially, they adhered to their traditional practices of raising pigs, goats, chickens, and other livestock, but eventually discovered that collecting and sorting the waste generated by city residents was more lucrative. The Zabbaleen meticulously sift through household refuse, reclaiming and selling valuable items, while the organic waste serves as an excellent food source for their animals. This successful arrangement attracted successive waves of migrants from Upper Egypt, who came to inhabit and work in the newly established garbage villages of Cairo.
At the conclusion of the tour, you will be transported back to your hotel.
